CHARACTER
Name: Jean Prouvaire, prefers Jehan
Canon: Les Misérables
Age: 15
Demigod/Hunter/Satyr/Nymph: Demigod, son of Demeter
Demigod abilities: Like all children of Demeter, Jehan can manipulate plants. He also has a knack for cooking.
Personality: Jehan a very sensitive boy, but not in the sense that he’s always crying and can’t take a hit or two. On the contrary, he’s remarkably stubborn and not to be taken lightly in spite of his gentleness. He’s simply very comfortable with his emotions and the emotions of others and tries to help when he sees someone hurting or being subject to some sort of injustice. He can’t stand the idea of people being treated unfairly and has gotten into quite a few fights with people over it. Because he’s so small (he might reach five foot eight if he’s lucky and will never weigh more than 150 pounds) and shy, people tend to underestimate him. This is a big mistake. In a physical fight, he will put up the best fight he can and might even win. In a fight of words, he’s hard to beat if only because he’s so passionate about his side that he will defend it to the death. Most people prefer to give up when faced with a passionate Jehan. It’s a bit like strangling ivy; the tiny plant eventually chokes the giant tree with sheer refusal to die.
Once he gets past his shyness, Jehan is incredibly sweet and friendly, frequently willing to do almost anything with his friends. He’ll do whatever he can to help them, if they need it, though sometimes his idea of helping is a bit…odd. For all that his mother is the goddess of plants, nature, and other living things, Jehan is fascinated by all things dead, dying, macabre, and extreme. He finds a dead rose just as pretty as a living one and thinks the Catacombs in Paris are the coolest thing. In his opinion, death is just as much a part of nature as life is. You can’t have one without the other and he wants to have a poisonous plant garden when he has the space for it.
He might be jealous of Persephone just a tad.
Even though he’s friendly and usually fairly happy, Jehan is prone to bouts of melancholy. It rarely keeps him down for very long, but he does have them. Because he’s so comfortable with himself and his emotions, he doesn’t bother hiding his down moods unless it’s in everyone’s best interest for him to do so. Generally, going out to a garden or just wandering around in a field will cheer him up enough to be decent company. He’ll still be eccentric and odd company, but decent company.
AU History: Jehan spent the first few years of his life thinking that his father’s wife was his mother. His father saw no need to tell Jehan of his divine heritage and his father’s wife agreed. She wasn’t upset that Monsieur Prouvaire had been wooed by Demeter, gods will be gods and she honestly felt blessed that the goddess had seduced her husband, but there wasn’t any need to tell the boy when he was too little to understand it. When Jehan was about six, however, his family had a run in with a satyr on a trip to New Orleans and Jehan had to be told. He wasn’t in much danger for a demigod, being Demeter’s son, but they couldn’t hide the truth any longer.
Jehan took it surprisingly well, as little kids will sometimes, though he was most concerned about his “Mama” not loving him anymore. Once reassured that just because Demeter was his mother didn’t mean Madame Prouvaire didn’t love him like her own son, he was excited to learn more about his heritage. He was homeschooled by both his stepmother and a few private tutors and all of his lessons were somehow connected to mythology and his place in it. He even began to learn (modern) Greek when he was seven because it seemed like a good idea at the time to him and the letters didn’t swim quite as much. His favorite lessons tended to involve literature (of all sorts, since so many authors referenced Greek mythology) or plants.
Because of his unique schooling situation, his ADHD and dyslexia never posed as much of a problem in learning as it might have otherwise. It was hard to keep him occupied and interested in even his favorite lessons as a child, but it wasn’t too detrimental to his education. Even if it had been, the Prouvaires were wealthy enough that Jehan could have attended a school for children with learning difficulties if he had wanted. The fear of monsters, however, kept him close to Cannes. Once he was old enough, about eleven or so, he began to attend the camp during the summer, though once things began to get hairy in America, his stepmother kept him home in France. Maybe it wasn’t the smartest idea, but neither of them really cared.
Jehan doesn’t have much of a relationship with his mother, though he does refer to her as “Maman” if he wants to talk about her and not let everyone know who his mother is. He refers to his stepmother as “Mama” since she was the one who raised him. (His father is very much the sort of person who isn’t there for their child’s life. Yeah, his kid’s a demigod, but all he can do is control plants. Big whoop.)
